What is henequen?
It is a species of plant from the agave genus native to and cultivated in the state of Yucatán. It is characterized by its strong, malleable fibers, making it perfect for making bags, shoes, tablecloths, baskets, and other handcrafted products. It requires four to six years of cultivation to be fully utilized, and it is widely used in industry, crafts, and even as an alcoholic beverage.
It was of great importance to the economy in the mid-19th century in the manufacture of ropes and cords, where it was called the “green gold of Yucatán.”
